Dr Tariq Banuri

Professor of Economics, University of Utah & Fmr. Chairman HEC

Tariq Banuri is a Professor of Economics at the University of Utah. He has formerly served as the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and as the Director of the UN Division for Sustainable Development. Professor Banuri founded SDPI Islamabad and was its first Executive Director from 1992-1997. Later, he served as the Research Director at the Stockholm Environmnet Institute and as a Research Fellow at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research. A PhD in Economics from Harvard University, his research interests encompass sustainable development, governance, and the philosophy of knowledge. Banuri has made significant contributions to both national and international policy and research arenas. He served as the Coordinating Lead Author on the Nobel Prize-winning Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), was a member of the UN Committee on Development Policy (CDP), Pakistan Environmental Protection Council, and the Board of Governors of Pakistan’s central bank. Additionally, he was a member and secretary of the Steering Committee on Higher Education. In recognition of his exemplary contributions to research and education, he was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2002.
